Education and Certifications:
Ross N. Taylor has been active in the fisheries management profession in northern California since graduating from HSU in 1986. His career started with the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) as a scientific aide conducting angler-harvest surveys on the lower Klamath River and fall-run Chinook salmon spawner surveys within Klamath tributaries. Mr. Taylor started his consulting business in 1994 and has been leading participant in fish passage issues in California since 1998. Mr. Taylor’s goal as a fisheries biologist and a small-business owner has been to foster a staff of trained professionals to collect and analyze high-quality data that allows for objective analyses of results to properly assist resources managers. An additional goal is to provide educational resources to further the knowledge of salmonid biology and watershed processes. As a smaller firm we have been working on projects as both the lead consultant, as well as sub-contracting to other firms and organizations to address projects that require a multi- disciplinary approach to solving. To date we have partnered with the following firms/organizations: · Laco Associates, Eureka, CA. Del Norte County fish passage project on Jordan Creek/Parkway Drive. Participated in pre-project site visits, provided input (biological considerations) to review of design options, and reviewed draft blueprints of selected designs at two crossings (one county and one private). Also wrote and submitted a grant for partial funding of the flatcar bridge installed at the private crossing. ($25,000 grant was funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation). · HDR, Inc., Sacramento, CA. On-call environmental services contract with CalTrans. Fisheries biology services in relation to fish passage assessment and stream crossing passage improvement projects. · Spencer Engineering, McKinleyville, CA. Conducted fish relocation for the Francis Creek channel rehabilitation and flood-control project in Ferndale, CA. · Bryan A. Stirrat & Associates, Inc, Diamond Bar, CA. CEQA permitting for closure of the Mendocino South-coast landfill in Gualala, CA. Conducted biological and stream habitat assessment of South Fork Gualala River adjacent to landfill. Drafted impact determinations related to fisheries resources. Reviewed draft closure plans, with special consideration towards measures implemented to reduce potential impacts to stream channel and fisheries resources. · Northwest Hydraulic Consultants, West Sacramento, CA. Fish passage improvement projects in Santa Cruz county. Participated in site visits, provided input (biological considerations) to design options, and reviewed draft of selected designs for culvert retrofits at three county-maintained crossings in Browns Creek and Corralitos Creek, tributaries to the Pajaro River. · Tetra-tech, Inc., Arcata, CA.
