Education and Training
For Sake of the Salmon - In 2001 and 2003, Mr. Taylor was a presenter at two series of fish passage workshops organized by the For Sake of the Salmon (FSOS). In 2001-02, six three-day long workshops were held in Fortuna, Ukiah, Petaluma, Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura. These workshops provided an overview of many topics related to fish passage, including: life history of affected species, types of barriers, effects on anadromous fishes, field methods for evaluation, assessment techniques, prioritization, design options, and potential funding sources. Workshop consisted of two lecture days and a single field day. In 2003, a two-day long Design and Engineering workshop has held in Ukiah and a three-day Fish Passage Overview workshop and the two-day Design and Engineering workshop has held in Ventura. Unfortunately, the 2003 series of workshops was cut short due to poor attendance caused by severe state and federal budget cuts. Participants included: Humboldt State University, CalTrans, CDFG, NOAA Fisheries, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service, Army Corp of Engineers, Regional Water Quality Boards, Environmental Protection Agency, Coastal Conservancy, numerous County Public Works, Transportation, and Planning Departments, California Conservation Corps, private biological and engineering firms, and non-profit watershed organizations. Cal-Trans Trainings on CDFG Permitting - In 2002, Mr. Taylor was a presenter at a series of four, five-day long trainings for CalTrans engineers and environmental specialists organized by the CDFG’s 1600 Permitting Division. Mr. Taylor co-taught the fish passage assessment classroom and field modules with George Heisse, a CDFG hydraulic engineer.
